Session Summary
The party concluded their bug fight on the Stormhorn plateau and plunged into the ancient tomb complex that lay beyond — a dungeon built over a massive arcanic beetle nest and secretly serving as a waystation on the Spirit Road. What began as a simple search for beetle guano and eggs became an elaborate three-puzzle gauntlet through a rotunda adorned with the heraldry of House Osrin, House Irungarten, and the founding families of the Farseas. Tao disabled traps as the party's shadow-stepping vanguard, Zolat cracked the stone basin puzzle, and the group collectively deciphered a dwarven combination lock and a phonetic navigation map — the first full encounter with the Spirit Road's ancient teleportation system.
Inserting three ceremonial keys into a triangular pedestal raised the gilded sarcophagus of Key Master Chester — an Osrin-interred wraith who woke demanding to know why the party had disturbed him. When told they came for "bug poop and eggs," Chester pointed downward, revealing a massive cavernous pit housing a beetle queen and her brood. The tomb sealed itself shut around them.
Zolat descended on Vindvenford's magic carpet in a Mission Impossible-style stealth run — rolling a combined 40 on stealth — past clutches of eggs and millipede-filled tunnels to the beetle queen's lair at the bottom. There she discovered a second sarcophagus with crystalline walls and a steel door, picked both locks via Mage Hand from 30 feet away, and narrowly escaped the queen's snapping mandibles. The session ended on a cliffhanger: Key Master Chester's face looking down at the beetle queen's lair, then back at the party — "Why did you wake this place?" — cut to black.
Key Events
- Bug combat concluded — Party finished off remaining arcanic beetles from the previous session; Tao discovered that the bugs' inner coating soothes their own acid burns (nat 20 nature check); Silus arrived late and healed the party with Mass Cure Wounds at 7th level for 27 HP
- Trapped corridor — Tao cast Pass Without Trace (+10 stealth) and scouted ahead, disabling four mechanical swing-arm traps via a lever box (Insight 23)
- Chain lightning trap — The rotunda's inner gate zapped the entire party for 33 lightning damage (DC 16 Con save for half); everyone left smoldering
- Puzzle 1 — Stone Basin — Zolat solved the colored stone puzzle: red, white, black, and opal stones placed in correct alcoves based on the inscription "The blood of founding is not what was spilled from what was given"; a granite key emerged
- Puzzle 2 — Dwarven Anvil — Five-ring combination lock on a guano-covered anvil beneath an iron relief of Ironclaw Castle bearing the Irungarten sigil; the answer was a five-letter word from the founding families; a corroded ring was freed with a spell; a black iron key emerged
- Puzzle 3 — Phonetic Map — An abstract Spirit Road navigation map covered the wall of the Hollow Gate alcove; a metal beetle statue sang phonetic route sequences when someone thought of a destination; speaking the tomb's phonetic name ("Paulo") released a near-translucent crystalline key
- Key Master Chester awakened — Three keys inserted into the triangular pedestal; mechanism raised a gilded Osrin-crested sarcophagus; the wraith of Key Master Chester rose and asked "Why have you woken me?"
- Descent to the beetle queen — Zolat descended on Vindvenford's magic carpet (stealth 40); discovered the beetle queen and a second locked sarcophagus; picked both locks with Mage Hand (rolls of 28 and 32); narrowly escaped the queen's attack of opportunity

- Elden's Crossing — Party hometown (referenced)
- Ironclaw Castle — Iron relief carving of the castle found in the tomb's first alcove, bearing the Irungarten sigil; Vindvenford spat on it
Factions & Organizations
- House Osrin — The tomb bears Osrin family heraldry throughout; Key Master Chester is interred here as an Osrin guardian; the Silver Bell of Eleanor Osrin remains in Tao's Bag of Holding
- House Irungarten — Iron relief of Ironclaw Castle with the Irungarten sigil found in the first alcove
- The Founding Families — Five families whose heraldry decorates the tomb and whose names form the combination lock answer: Irungarten, Kropus, Foxmantle, Osrin, and one other; Coralheart explicitly ruled out as a founding family
Items of Note
- The Three Oversized Keys — Ceremonial keys (granite, black iron, crystalline) used to unlock Key Master Chester's sarcophagus via the triangular pedestal mechanism; Kingdom Hearts-style oversized keys
- The Silver Bell of Eleanor Osrin — Still in Tao's Bag of Holding; not used this session
- Spike — Vindvenford's +3 steaming pike, gained through a ritual with his giant gods at the hot springs near Threetrees
- The Metal Beetle Statue — Magical navigation device in the Hollow Gate alcove; sings Spirit Road route phonetics when someone thinks of a destination; its melody gets involuntarily stuck in the listener's head
- Beetle Eggs — Clutch collected from the stone basin alcove; more available in the queen's nest below
- Beetle Guano — Small amount collected from the dwarven anvil; party needs a full bag for Donovon's deal to free Tao's petrified family
Lore Revealed
- Spirit Road Phonetic Navigation System — An ancient teleportation network activated by speaking phonetic syllable sequences. Locations are identified by phonetic names ("Paulo" for the tomb, "Mama" for Threetrees). Routes are defined by sequences of syllables — speaking or singing them in order activates travel. The map is represented by glyphs carved on tiles and walls within a triangle motif. The three triangle points represent doorways to the Spirit Road itself — labeled "L" (west), "A" (north), and "Row" (south), tracing to Osrin family names.
- The Tomb as Osrin Infrastructure — Plaques throughout the tomb are dedicated to "engineering leads" who died during construction. The tomb was a major Osrin engineering project connecting to Ironclaw Castle (Irungarten) and the other founding families.
- Bug Broth Remedy — The inner coating of arcanic beetles soothes the acid burns caused by their own foam; Tao discovered this via a nat 20 nature check after crushing a bug bare-footed.
- Second Sarcophagus — A crystalline-walled tomb with a steel door lies beneath the beetle queen at the bottom of the pit; Zolat picked both its locks but the contents remain unknown.
- Coralheart Family Status — Explicitly ruled out as NOT one of the five major founding families whose names form the combination lock code.
Combat Encounters
1. Bug Fight (Continuation from Previous Session)
Enemies: Large arcanic beetles (AC 15, ~30 HP); one fire-breathing variant | Outcome: Victory
- Tao dealt 34 damage with Flurry of Blows; crushed a bug and took acid foot damage (2 HP); nat 20 nature check discovered the soothing bug broth remedy
- Fire-breathing bug sprayed noxious flammable substance (15 fire + 5 acid damage)
- Silus arrived late, joined initiative, cast Mass Cure Wounds at 7th level (27 HP to all)
- Bug corpses produced acidic foam that necrotizes flesh on contact
Non-Combat Hazards
- Chain Lightning Trap — 33 damage (DC 16 Con save for half) to all party members near the inner gate
- Beetle Queen Attack of Opportunity — Snapped at Zolat's retreating magic carpet; missed (+2 bonus)
Notable Moments
- 🥷 Tao the Nightcrawler — Tao desperately wanted Shadow Step to work like X-Men's Nightcrawler, pausing mid-shadow. The DM ruled it requires traversal between two points — no lingering in the shadow dimension. Tao's dreams of being a shadow ninja, dashed.
- 🦶 Acid foot, nat 20 cure — Tao crushed a bug barefoot and got acid up his heel. Failed the con save, foot went numb. Then rolled a nat 20 and discovered the bug's own guts are the antidote. Peak tortle problem-solving.
- 👻 "I am the key master" — Key Master Chester rose from his sarcophagus and the party immediately asked if he was the gatekeeper. Ghostbusters reference: confirmed. Chester was not amused.
- 💩 "We came for poop and eggs" — When Chester asked why they'd woken him, the party's honest answer was that they needed bug excrement and beetle eggs. Chester's response: bewildered concern.
- 🎵 The earworm route — When Vindvenford thought of home, the metal beetle sang a phonetic melody that got involuntarily stuck in his head. Spirit Road navigation: beautiful but invasive.
- 🕵️ Stealth 40 — Zolat's descent into the beetle queen's lair: Pass Without Trace + rolled 30 = stealth 40. Mission Impossible on a magic carpet through a pit of nightmare bugs.
- 🔐 Mage Hand lockpick at 30ft — Zolat used Mage Hand with thieves' tools to pick both locks on the second sarcophagus from 30 feet away while hovering on a carpet above a giant beetle queen. Rolls of 28 and 32. At disadvantage. Criminal excellence.
- 🧩 Puzzle difficulty curve — The players' assessment: "The first two were good simple puzzles. Third one was like what the [expletive]." The DM's response: "You guys didn't get defeated. You solved it fully. Now you got to fight the reward."
- 😤 Vindvenford spits on Ironclaw — Upon seeing the iron relief of Ironclaw Castle in the first alcove, Vindvenford immediately spat on it. Whatever beef he has with the Irungarten family, it runs deep.
Open Threads
- What's in the second sarcophagus? — Zolat picked the locks but hasn't opened it yet; who else is buried beneath the beetle queen?
- Beetle queen standoff — The party needs more guano and eggs from the queen's nest; the queen is aware and hostile
- Key Master Chester — The wraith is awake and asking questions; potential ally, information source, or threat
- Trapped in the rotunda — All exits sealed when the sarcophagus mechanism activated; party needs a way out
- Spirit Road access — The phonetic map reveals a teleportation network; potential fast-travel to Threetrees, Vindvenford's home, and other locations — possibly relevant to freeing Papa Croakus
- The spreading sickness — Parasitic infection in the Stormhorns continues; connected to Eadaz's mutations and the bug nest overgrowth
- Draxus — A blue dragon (or former blue dragon) mentioned in the previous session at Threetrees; still unresolved
