Elden's Crossing

Elden's Crossing

Elden's Crossing is a town in the north-western Farseas, currently the base of operations for the adventuring party in Season 4 of the Farseas Chronicles. It sits at a crossing point that has long been significant for travel between the eastern approaches and the deeper swamp, and its legal and political status — long contested — has recently become the subject of the most important land-rights dispute in the region.

Geography

The town occupies a relatively elevated section of the Farseas' northern margins, accessible by the ancient cliff road that connects it to Slymount and Threetrees to the south. Parts of Elden's Crossing's newest expansion — the "west end" — are now submerged in swamp water, a consequence of the same geological processes that have reshaped the Farseas' waterline over the past century.

The submerged west end is significant beyond the loss of property: it is where the land treaties establishing swamp ownership — critical documents defining who holds methane rights and who doesn't — were filed. Adventurers have had to exhume these records from the drowned archives to establish that swamp ownership does not fall to the Obarskyrs and Cormyr by default, thereby protecting the Aris Family's political position and the Kropus commercial interests.

Mayor Wreth

The town's mayor is Wreth — a lawyer-turned-mayor who has navigated the difficult intersection of Cormyrean law, swamp sovereignty, and Foxmantle commercial aggression with more skill than most expected. Carcenjo Foxmantle II trapped and tortured him in Slymount, seeking his signature on documents authorising Foxmantle methane claims that Cormyrean law explicitly prohibits. Wreth refused.

He was freed by adventurers, who became Carcenjo's enemies in the process.

Political Status

Elden's Crossing's independence is the central tension of the current arc. The town sits in the gap between multiple competing claims: the Cormyrean crown's nominal authority, the Aris Family's regional rule, and the commercial ambitions of the House Foxmantle family and other interests seeking to control the methane facilities in and around the town.

The exhumation of the land treaty records from the submerged west end was a critical legal step — establishing that swamp ownership doesn't default to the Obarskyrs gave the Aris family and the swamp denizens room to negotiate from strength rather than capitulation.

Whether Elden's Crossing survives as a free settlement depends on what happens next.

The Town

Elden's Crossing is being actively developed by the adventuring party as a base of operations. It is not large, but it is strategically positioned — its location on the cliff road makes it a waypoint for travel through the northern Farseas, and its proximity to the submerged land treaty archives makes it politically significant beyond its size.
